Muirburn Practitioner Foundation Level Course Information Sheet 

Thank you for your interest in the Muirburn Practitioner Foundation Level Training Module.

The first step of this training is to successfully complete the free e-learning package.

You must complete this module before undertaking the practical training part of this qualification. Please follow the link below to create an account (LearnPro Community) and access the e-learning part of the training.  Create Account

Once you have successfully completed the e-learning module please either print your certificate, or save an electronic copy. To be able to commence the practical training session you will require proof of successful completion of the e-learning module.

Bright Spark Burning Techniques Limited provide the practical training for the LANTRA accredited Muirburn Practitioner Foundation Course.

Locations for the course will vary – we are happy to come to your Estate to do the training or you can come to one of our designated training sites.  There will be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 people on anyone training course for the practical day.   

The normal training day will be 9 am til 4 pm with an hour for lunch.  This can be varied with prior notice.

All our training instructors have at least 25 years’ muirburn experience.

 In the joining instructions to delegates, we will confirm the PPE they will require for the practical day’s training and the documentation they require to bring with them as proof of passing the elearning (or this can be emailed to us in advance) and photo ID.  All delegates must be at least 16 years of age.

 If the training is on your Estate/land, we will ask you to sign a consent to burn form and confirm you have the relevant insurance.  We will also send you a form to confirm the details of the trainees so we can ensure they are in the LANTRA system prior to the course.

 On the training day, the trainer, after consulting with the Head Keeper, will make the final decision on whether it is safe to burn owing to weather conditions.

The price is £245 per person – this includes the practical day and the LANTRA accreditation, the elearning module is free.    We will also charge mileage at .45p per mile from the trainer’s location to the training site.

If the training cannot be completed in one day owing to the weather and we have to make a return visit to do the assessment, we will charge £50.00 per person plus travel costs.

 Invoices will be sent in advance of the course and must be paid 7 days prior to the course taking place.

Course description:

Muirburn Practitioner Foundation Course

Online module – the Muirburn Code with built in assessments. (approx. 30 minutes)

Practical module:

• Identifying the correct PPE

• The safe use of hand tools

• The safe use of mechanical equipment

• Weather Considerations including Wildfire Danger Assessments

• Identification and creation of fire breaks

• Safely applying fire

• Safely extinguishing fire, including post burn monitoring.

• Communications

• Team safety and wellbeing.

The finer details

The course is split into 2 distinct sections, the online module and the practical module. Students must have successfully completed the online module before attending the practical module.

The online module will cover the requirements of the Muirburn Code including where and when Muirburn can be carried out, restrictions on where Muirburn can be carried out and the required notifications before Muirburning.

The practical module will cover the basics on how to safely use equipment, both mechanical and non-mechanical, the correct PPE, the on the day considerations such as weather and wildfire danger assessments, the safe application of fire and post burn considerations. Assessment will be via direct observation and knowledge and understanding checks.
